The invention disclosed herein provides new methods for analyzing oil production properties of an oil well and in aspects identifying locations of relatively higher likelihood of petroleum productivity within a well. The invention comprises comparing characteristics of one or more samples of rock from the well (e.g., petroleum cuttings) with a fluid produced from the same well or a related well. Select compounds and select relationship(s) between compounds are typically used in the method to ensure data quality and its predictive properties; select methods (e.g., gentle volatiles extraction) are used to derive the compounds; or both. In one application, a method comprises comparing compounds or compound ratios in each sample or sample set to identify well portions contributing most to oil production of the well. Comparative analyses can occur within a single well or across two or more wells.
