Rare earth complexes having one or more trivalent rare earth ions and a plurality of ligands coordinated to the rare earth ions are disclosed. A plurality of ligands include a first ligand having a carborane group and a coordination group capable of binding to a carbon atom of the carborane group and coordinating to a rare earth ion, and a second ligand having a photosensitization.
