The invention relates to a method for embedding functional fibers in a workpiece during selective laser sintering. Two variants of the method are proposed. In a first variant of the method, parts of the powder layer (pw) are sintered with a laser beam, for example, before the insertion process. A heating element (hk) then melts the workpiece parts that have already melted again. The functional fiber (ff) is fed through a channel (kn) in the heating element (hk) by means of a feed device to the melt or the melt-like mass and is inserted into the melt or melt-like mass at the insertion point. As a result of the movement of the heating element (hk), the fully or partially melted area moves away from the heating element and is heated less, which means that it cools down and solidifies with the functional fiber that has already been inserted. According to the proposal, this variant can also be used to insert fibers into objects that have been produced, for example, by injection molding or extruder-based 3D printing or other methods of additive manufacturing.
