A method (S1-S7) serves for operating a domestic steam-treatment appliance (1) having a steam-treatment chamber (7) and a steam generator (4), which is arranged outside the steam-treatment chamber (7) and is connected to a water tank (2), wherein, in the method, a) the steam generator (4) heats the water to an increased preheating temperature below an evaporation temperature (S3), b) the water (W) is kept at the preheating temperature (S4), and c), when the indication is given to introduce steam (D) (S5), the water is heated further to an evaporation temperature and the steam (D) generated is introduced into the steam-treatment chamber (7) (S6). A domestic steam-treatment appliance (1) is designed for implementing the method (S1-S11). The invention can be used in particular advantageously in stand-alone steam-treatment appliances and in combined steam-treatment appliances, i.e. cooking appliances such as ovens and/or microwaves which have an additional steam-treatment function. The invention can be used in particular advantageously for baking dough products, for example bread, in particular together with a preheating operation of the steam-treatment chamber.
