A Listen Before Talk (LBT) mechanism for the coexistence of Long Term Evolution Licensed Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) and Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) in LTE-LAA nodes. A method is provided. The disclosed method includes selecting a random backoff value from a range defined by an ECCA contention window value for a current stage of Extended Clear Channel Assessment (ECCA), based on observation of a channel in an unlicensed band. calculating the collision probability and using the collision probability based on the observation of the channel in Reinforcement Learning (RL) to learn an action policy to adjust the ECCA contention window value for subsequent stages of ECCA. .
