The use of a Peltier element (P) as a high-performance radiation sensor for electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths of up to 20 µm with radiation powers greater than 100 watts is proposed, with an electrical voltage on the Peltier element (P) depending on the heat flow induced by the radiation in the transverse direction (Q) of the Peltier element (P) is measured, the Peltier element (P) having a thermally active layer of alternately arranged first thermopiles (1) comprising a first material (A) and second thermopiles (2) comprising a second material (B) and the thermopiles (1 , 2) are free of semiconductors.
