The present invention relates to an optical system for displaying light from a scene. The optical system has an active optical element comprising a first light directing aperture arrangement, a light detector, a display, and a second light directing aperture arrangement. The first array of light directing apertures is positioned to provide a light input to the light detector. The optical detector is positioned to receive an optical input and convert the optical input into an electrical signal corresponding to intensity and position data. The processor is coupled to receive data from the light detector and process the data for display. The second light directing aperture arrangement is positioned to receive light output from the display.
