Provided are a steel material having excellent resistance to hydrogen embrittlement in a high-pressure hydrogen gas environment, suitable for use in a hydrogen accumulator, a hydrogen line pipe, and the like, and a method for producing the same. It has a predetermined component composition, has tensile strength: 560 MPa or more, and has a fracture toughness value (K _IH ) in a high- ^{pressure hydrogen gas atmosphere of 40 MPa·m 1/2} or more.
