Knee arthroplasty is the standard treatment for advanced knee arthritis. A new device and method for a patient-specific instrument (PSI) was first reported by Hafez et al. (Documents 1 to 3) in 2004 and 2006, and then several implant manufacturers produced and commercialized PSI for their knee implants only. Therefore, these PSIs only relate to their implants and are expensive and cannot be used as an open universal platform (Documents 4 to 6). The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for preparing a knee joint for a prosthetic appliance in a patient undergoing TKA surgery for a knee implant (prosthetic appliance). The device and method are used in an open universal platform manner for all knee implants currently in use, all patient-specific implants and all knee implants that may be produced in the future. The device is a patient-specific instrument, an image-based (CT, MRI or computer-aided X-ray) three-dimensional preliminary to design a template (PSI) used to perform knee surgery in an open universal platform manner on a knee implant. It is based on the method including the surgical plan.
