When electrodes are used to apply an electric field to target tissue within an anatomical volume (e.g., when applying a TTField for tumor treatment), it is possible to measure electrical conductivity in the anatomical volume and generate a 3D map to optimize the electrode's position. It is possible to measure conductivity directly from conductivity or resistivity measurements obtained without dividing the anatomical volume into tissue types. The location of the target tissue within the anatomical volume is identified, and the location relative to the electrode is determined based on the 3D map of electrical conductivity and the location of the target tissue.
