The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for determining the energy release rate of a test piece, by means of an actuation element (2). The test piece (1) comprises two adherent elements (1.1, 1.2) adhered by means of an adhesive material (1.0), which are extended in a longitudinal axis (Y). The test piece (1) and the element (2) are arranged in a required position, and a pushing force is applied on the test piece (1) by means of the element (2), with said test piece (1) and said element (2) in said required position. The adherent elements (1.1, 1.2) are thus deformed, defining an opening angle (θ) with respect to the longitudinal axis (Y), and the energy release rate of the test piece (1) is determined from said opening angle (θ) and from properties associated with the test piece (1) and with the element (2).
