A method for storing nuclear fuel is described. Optionally, the method includes immersing at least a portion of the nuclear fuel rod in a storage pool comprising an aqueous solution comprising at least one of polyhedral borohydride anions or carborane anions. Optionally, the method includes adding a salt comprising polyhedral borohydride anions or carborane anions to a storage pool containing water and at least a portion of the nuclear fuel rods immersed therein. The method may include both. A storage pool is also described. The storage pool includes an aqueous solution containing at least one of a polyhedral borohydride anion and a carborane anion, and at least a portion of the nuclear fuel rod is immersed in the aqueous solution. A method for preparing the reactor core is also described.
