Multi-hop routing protocol with backup routes in WLAN networks

A wireless communication device, system, or method for use in performing data transmission over a communication band (eg, directional mmW) maintaining a primary and at least one backup route for communication between a source station and a destination station is disclosed. Route discovery messages are sent to neighboring stations when creating a route through multiple hops. Link metrics shared with other stations along the routing path are determined. Route discovery and routing response messages are propagated to neighboring stations except the transmitting station. The destination station, upon receipt of the route discovery message, determines a primary route and at least one backup route, and transmits this information in the route response message back to the originator of the route discovery message. Stations maintain these primary and backup routes via status request and status response messages.
