Methods for inspecting coatings, processes, and products are provided. Measure the release from the coated surface of at least one volatile species into the gas space adjacent to the coated surface and compare the result with the result for at least one reference object measured under the same test conditions. Thereby, it is possible to determine the presence or absence of a coating and/or the physical and/or chemical properties of the coating. This method is useful for inspecting any coated product, for example, a container. In particular, the application of PFCV coatings made of organic silicon precursors, especially the inspection of barriers and coatings, is also disclosed.
