Authorising a write command to a process control device in a distributed process control system by, intercepting a write command to a process control device issued by a first user 701, then determining a second user based on a relationship identifier of the first user 702. It then prompts the second user to validate the write command 703, and authenticates the second user based on a biometric input of the second user 704. Finally, it releases the write command for execution on the process control device upon determining a match between the biometric input of the second a biometric identifier in a profile of the second user 705. In another embodiment it may assign at least one relationship identifier value to each user , where the identifier value references another existing profile within a user manager database. The relationship identifier of the user profile may be a biometric identifier of the second user.
