Monitoring system (9) of a water meter, comprising a cover (1) provided with a central part (2) intended to surround the water meter and a downstream leak detection device for detection of a water leak downstream of said water meter, comprising: - an acoustic sensor (5) arranged inside the central part of the cover, said acoustic sensor being provided for, in situation, detecting a characteristic sound d 'a flow of water circulating through the water meter and generated by a moving part, such as a turbine, a rotor or a piston, arranged inside the water meter for metering; and a control module connected to said acoustic sensor for receiving and processing an acoustic detection signal generated by said acoustic sensor, and determining a water leak downstream of said water meter as a function of said acoustic detection signal.
