This bill handling device comprises: a discrimination unit which discriminates each input paper sheet; a first storage mechanism which temporarily stores each discriminated paper sheet; and a plurality of second storage mechanisms, each of which is provided for a different type of paper sheet and stores corresponding paper sheets. The bill handling device determines, on the basis of the discrimination results, a transfer order for transferring each paper sheet from the first storage mechanism to one of the second storage mechanisms. On the basis of the transfer order, the bill handling device stores each paper sheet in the corresponding second storage mechanism by controlling the start and stop of each drive device that drives a respective one of the plurality of second storage mechanisms.
