Provided are: a degradation accelerator which is suitable for use in a biodegradable resin and which can increase and appropriately control the biodegradation speed and degradation degree of a biodegradable resin such as an aliphatic polyester-based resin, an aliphatic-aromatic polyester-based resin or an aliphatic oxycarboxylic acid-based resin; and a biodegradable resin composition containing this degradation accelerator. This degradation accelerator for a biodegradable resin contains cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The mass ratio of nitrogen relative to carbon in the degradation accelerator for a biodegradable resin is 0.04 or more. The mass ratio of the content of hemicellulose relative to the total content of cellulose and lignin is 0.2 or more.
