Methods and devices for treating chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus

The subject matter disclosed herein relates to a method of effective treatment of chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus. In particular, the methods include transmucosal administration of nalmefene for the treatment of chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus, as well as cholestatic pruritus and/or prurigo nodosa. Nalmefene may be composed of a single layer film comprising at least two distinct domains. The film may comprise a first discrete domain comprising about 50-100 weight percent polymer matrix, and the second discrete domain may comprise nalmefene or a pharmaceutically acceptable nalmefene salt.
