A method of reducing energy consumption of a display device, the method comprising: (a) determining lighting conditions around the display device, (b) determining content that a user selects to view on the display device, and (c) an image using the appearance model to calculate the user's perception of the display quality, (d) when the perceived display quality is higher than the target display quality, display the perceived display quality to match the target display quality to reduce energy consumption including adjusting device conditions. The device utilizes the above method to reduce energy consumption while providing an aesthetically pleasing viewing experience to the user.
