Signal element coding format compatibility within hierarchical coding schemes using multiple resolutions

A method for encoding and decoding a signal is provided. The method includes receiving a first signal 900 and a second signal 960 , the first and second signals comprising different versions of common content, the first signal 900 including the first signal A component coding format is used and the second signal 960 uses a second signal component coding format. The first signal 900 is encoded by the lower encoding module 1103 to generate a lower encoded signal 910 . The lower encoded signal 910 is decoded to produce a lower decoded signal. The lower decoded signal is processed by converting and upsampling from at least a first signal component coding format to a second signal component coding format to produce a processed signal. The processed signal and the second signal 960 are processed by the upper encoding module 1107 to generate an upper encoded signal 920 .
