Catalyst reactor configuration and preparation, as well as a process for the direct synthesis of ethylene by the oxygen free catalysis of methane. The reactor configuration comprises an inlet section I, a preheating section II, a transition section III, a reaction section IV and an outlet section V. With the exception of the preheating section II and the reaction section IV, depending on the reaction conditions, the inlet section I, the transition section III and the outlet section V may or may not be provided. The process achieves zero carbon formation from methane and high selective synthesis of ethylene.
