To prevent a backflow of blood into the tip of a catheter and increase effectiveness of aspiration.SOLUTION: A catheter 101 for assisting in retrieval of a clot from a vessel includes: a distal end 112 and a proximal end; a distal segment 90 and a proximal segment; a lumen extending proximal to the distal end and terminating at a transfer port 105 at the proximal end of the distal segment; and a flow restrictor 102 located on an outer surface of the catheter distal to the transfer port.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 11a
