The near-eye display includes at least one of a combiner having a freeform nanostructure surface, a secondary mirror, and a waveguide. A freeform nanostructure surface includes a freeform surface, a nanostructure surface, or a combination of a freeform surface and a nanostructure surface. The free-form nanostructure surface may be incorporated into a combiner or secondary mirror in the near-eye display in a compact folded arrangement, with an anamorph as needed between the image source and the free-form nanostructure surface. Fick or free-form optical components may intervene. The nanostructured surface can include a meta-diffraction grating operable over the visible spectrum. The meta-diffraction grating includes meta atoms configured to provide a given efficiency at a desired wavelength in reflection.
