The invention relates to a method for producing a security document, such as a bank note, comprising successive steps of: laminating a paper substrate having a grammage lower than or equal to 90 grams per square metre so as to reduce the thickness of the substrate, the substrate being a sheet or a web of paper; if the substrate is a web of paper, cutting the substrate into a plurality of separate sheets of paper; and applying at least one film of a polymer material to at least one face of the or each sheet of paper.
