To provide a varnish for forming an optical alignment film that prevents the generation of a DC afterimage or eliminates the afterimage in a short time even if it is generated in a liquid crystal display.SOLUTION: A varnish for an optical alignment film contains, in an aqueous medium, a first polyamide acid compound that is polyamide acid or polyamide acid ester.
