The present invention provides methods for the generation of photoreceptor cells and photoreceptor progenitor cells from pluripotent stem cells. Additionally provided are compositions of photoreceptor cells and methods of therapeutic use thereof, including photoreceptor cells. Exemplary methods can generate substantially pure cultures of photoreceptor cells and/or photoreceptor cells.
