The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating autoimmune diseases comprising human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells as an active ingredient. The human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells of the present invention do not show toxicity and inhibit the production of anti-dsDNA antibodies, proteinuria and total IgG, inhibit the proliferation of T cells and B cells, and suppress the expression of cytokines in T cells.
