A system for recording events in a distributed ledger comprises: a server; a terminal comprising a terminal processor executing an OS; and a data capture device, the data capture device comprising: a housing; a data capture assembly configured to capture product data; communication interface; a memory including a first driver and/or firmware, and a processor executing instructions in the memory. The instructions include instructions for transmitting product data to the terminal via the communication interface. The terminal includes a second driver through which the OS can communicate with the data capture device to accept product data. At least one of the first and second drivers and firmware includes a transmit flag that is changeable between enabled and disabled states. The active state causes product data to be sent to the server. If the product data satisfies the recording condition, the product data is recorded from the server to the distributed ledger.
