Innovations in the field of encoding or decoding blocks using intra block copy prediction improve the coding efficiency for intra BC predicted blocks in many situations. For example, some of the innovations relate to block flipping in which an intra BC predicted block is flipped with respect to a reference region, which can be represented by a block vector value. Another innovation relates to the signaling of the skip mode where the current intra BC predicted block uses the signaled BV difference but no residual data.
