According to the invention, such a method comprises: an estimate (406), as a function of a volume of data consumed by adaptive progressive downloading of digital content during at least one period by the multimedia stream reader terminal, of a volume of data which could be consumed by the terminal by adaptive progressive download of digital content during the session; determining (407) a maximum allowed encoding rate for downloading time segments of digital content during the session so that the estimated data volume is less than or equal to a determined consumption threshold of the data bucket.
