FUNCTIONAL POLYISOBUTYLENE-CONTAINING OLIGOMERS AND POLYMERS

Methods of making functional polyisobutylene (PIB)-containing oligomers and polymers are disclosed. By the disclosed method, the synthesis of functional PIB-containing polymers can be achieved under direct cationic polymerization conditions and does not involve any post-polymerization reactions. The required functional group does not react with the Lewis acid, but has a weak bond with the Lewis acid, still allowing living polymerization and EAS reaction under living cationic polymerization conditions, direct electrophilic aromatic substitution using a substituted phenyl ring with the desired functional group. It is introduced by (EAS) reaction. Functional polyisobutylene or isobutylene containing oligomers and polymers in the disclosed method can be prepared using a stoichiometric or near stoichiometric ratio of the capping or functionalizing reagent to the polymer end-chain.
