The present invention relates to a method of operating a LiDAR system (1) formed by a SPAD-based detector element (22) operable with pulse sequence coding. In this method of operation, (i) the dead time (ttot) of the SPAD-based detector element (22) is detected, and (ii) in the transmission mode of the LiDAR system (1) either immediately in time or directly continuous. The minimum time interval (tmin) of the transmission pulses (57-1,..., 57-4) of the primary light (57) that are transmitted as described above is determined so as to at least approximately match the dead time (ttoto).
