A method of controlling a powertrain for a motor vehicle comprising at least two driving power sources and at least one driving wheel, comprising the following steps: - maximum and minimum torque tolerances at the wheel are determined with respect to predetermined rules, - a torque setpoint at the wheel is determined based on a torque request at the driver's wheel or at least one driving assistance system, - a distribution of the torque setpoint at the wheel between the motive power sources is determined, - it is checked that the sum of the torque setpoints at the wheel of the driving power sources is included in the tolerances previously determined with respect to the torque request at the driver's wheel, - it is checked, for each source of motive power, that the effective torque brought to the wheel is included in the tolerances previously determined with respect to the torque setpoint for the source of motive power, - it is checked that the sum of the effective torques brought to the wheel of each motive power source is also included in the tolerances previously determined with respect to the driver's torque request, - if at least one of the checks is not validated, a fault signal is emitted.
