A method with which surface tension of coal can be estimated with ease is provided.　A method for estimating surface tension of coal, in which a relational expression (second relational expression) expressing the relation between surface tension of coal and a total inert amount is calculated in advance from the surface tension of an inert structure in coal estimated on the basis of the coalification degree and the surface tension of a molten structure of coal, the total inert amount of coal for which surface tension is estimated is measured, and the surface tension of coal is calculated using the measured total inert amount and the relational expression.
