A distributed Serial Safety Net (SSN) includes a sequencer that receives a multi-shard transaction from a transaction client, assigns a commit timestamp (CTS) to the multi-shard transaction, and assigns the multi-shard transaction to at least two database shards for execution. Validator instances in each database shard of the at least two database shards sequence the multi-shard transaction according to the assigned CTS and co-operate with each other to exchange local transaction validation values for the assigned multi-shard transaction (e.g., eta and pi values of a serial safety net validation process). The validator instances in each database shard of the at least two database shards each further perform, e.g., a max() and a min() operation of the serial safety net validation process on received and local transaction validation values to determine final transaction validation values and commit or abort the assigned multi-shard transaction based on the final transaction validation values.
