PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adapt a CNC machine tool path from a nominal machined product shape to an actual machined product shape. The method comprises defining a grid of feature points on a nominal work piece shape, where the feature points include an area around the machine tool path, but not necessarily points on the machine tool path. The probe is actually used to detect the position of feature points on the work piece. The spatial mapping function is calculated as a conversion from nominal feature points to actual feature points, and the function is applied to the nominal tool path to calculate the new tool path. The new tool path is actually used by CNC machines to work on workpieces. Feature points are used to characterize the three-dimensional shape of the working surface of the actual work piece as well as curves or contour lines. [Selection diagram] Fig. 2
