A circular and curved surgical stapling instrument is disclosed that includes circular and curved stapling configurations. The circular staple cartridge includes a plurality of staples arranged in an inner row, an intermediate row, and an outer row. A particular row of staples may have a variable crown width to overlap a gap defined between the staples in a particular other row that provides an extension zone.
