PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plant communication system, a plant control / communication system, a process plant communication system, a method for processing data, and a method for configuring a data processing pipeline. SOLUTION: In a configuration environment, a specific processing operation is performed by using a series of data processing modules connected so as to be communicable together in a specific communication order across a plurality of defined different devices in the process plant environment. Different parts of the distributed data pipeline are defined to do for processing control data, and the plurality of different parts of the process plant environment defined in the configuration environment for run-time execution of the particular processing operation. Each of the devices includes a distributed data pipeline, which includes one or more upstream data processing modules downloaded from the configuration environment and the distributed data pipeline combined into a set of downstream data processing modules.
