This disclosure provides a battery cooling system in a cold environment using the passenger compartment air conditioning and heating system. A battery cooling mode in the cold environment of an electric vehicle can be implemented when the vehicle battery is charged at low ambient temperature and the battery temperature is raised. During charging in a cold environment, coolants flow through a heat exchanger and a battery heat exchanger. Cold ambient air can be used to cool the coolant flowing through the heat exchanger,and coolant from the heat exchanger flows through the battery heat exchanger and cools the battery during charging. A battery cooling system can be switched off when the battery cooling mode is switched on in a cold environment to reduce energy consumption.
