To overcome disadvantage that upon retrieval of an address, even if a popular but informal name is input, the retrieval cannot be executed since the popular but informal name is not registered at map data.SOLUTION: There is disclosed a retrieval area specifying method having a step of inputting data regarding a retrieval target described as a popular name, a step of specifying a crossing point on map data based on the data of the retrieval target, a step of specifying a direction from the crossing point based on the retrieval target data, and a step of specifying, on the map data, a retrieval area in contact with a first road extended in the specified direction from the crossing point.
