The present invention relates to a method for detecting abnormal self-discharge in a battery system by monitoring the balancing charge per cell, and to a battery system configured for use of the method. The method according to the invention makes it possible to predict the probability of occurrence of a safety critical condition, for example an internal short circuit, so that, as a result, appropriate countermeasures can be taken early.
