Provided are: an observation system capable of preventing reduction in visibility caused by burning of a display unit while minimizing recognition of misalignment between an optical image and a display image; a method for controlling the observation system; and a program for controlling the observation system. A digital camera 10 has a finder device 260-1 which superposes a display image (imaging range frame 218A) of an OLED display 218 onto an optical image 260A viewable from a viewing position VP so as to enable simultaneous visual confirmation of the display image and the optical mage 260A, wherein the digital camera is provided with a system control unit 41 that performs control to sequentially change the display position of the display image within a first range AR in the OLED display 218, and the maximum width B1 of the first range AR is 6'-18' in terms of the observation angle (viewing angle θ2) when the first range AR is observed from the viewing position VP.
