Mitochondrial expansion therapy for primary mitochondrial disease

The present invention provides human stem cells rich in functional mitochondria, wherein healthy functional exogenous mitochondria constitute at least 3% and less than 33% of total mitochondria in mitochondrial-rich human stem cells. Further disclosed are methods of producing such cells, and their use for treating primary mitochondrial diseases.
