PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stereo audio signal coding method and a system for time domain downmixing a right channel and a left channel of an input stereo audio signal into a primary channel and a secondary channel. The method and system determine a normalized correlation of left and right channels in relation to a monaural signal version of audio. The long-term correlation difference is determined based on the normalized correlation of the left channel and the normalized correlation of the right channel. The long-term correlation difference is converted to factor β, and the left and right channels are mixed to use factor β to generate the primary and secondary channels. Factor β determines the contribution of the left and right channels to the generation of the primary and secondary channels, respectively. [Selection diagram] Fig. 4
