In one embodiment, an input / output port comprises a stateful send port having: a history memory for storing a value corresponding to a send-on-change field of a previous data packet; a comparator for comparing a send-on-change field of the data packet with the value stored in the history memory; and a selection circuit for outputting the data packet without the send-on-change field if the send-on-change field of the data packet matches the value.
