The ultrasonic signal processor uses an excitation generator to cause displacement of the membrane or surface while a series of ultrasonic pulses are applied to the membrane or surface. The motion of the membrane or surface is determined in response to applied excitation by examining the phase difference between the transmitted and received signals. Examining the phase response of the membrane or surface determines whether the type of fluid behind the membrane or surface is fluid, either serum fluid or purulent fluid.
