The present invention relates to an activatable inorganic nanoparticle that can be used in the field of health, particularly in human health, to perturb, alter or destroy target cancerous cells, tissues or organs. More particularly, the present invention relates to nanoparticles that, when concentrated in a tumor and exposed to ionizing radiation, can produce surprisingly effective therapeutic effects. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising populations of nanoparticles as previously defined, and uses thereof.
