The invention relates, inter alia, to a method for operating rail vehicles (20) on a railway track system (10) which comprises at least one passenger transport region (11) for transporting passengers and at least one depot region (12) for parking the rail vehicles (20), an autonomous driving mode of the rail vehicles (20) being possible in the passenger transport region (11). According to the invention, for starting a rail vehicle (20) parked in the depot region (12), a drive command (FB) is transmitted to the vehicle instructing it to drive to a predetermined transfer point (113b), on receipt of the drive command (FB) the rail vehicle (20) begins driving in an autonomous auxiliary driving mode and, after meeting a predetermined condition, switches from the autonomous auxiliary driving mode into the autonomous driving mode and continues driving in the autonomous driving mode to the transfer point (113b).
