The invention relates to a method (100) for predicting a damage mechanism on a roller bearing (10) in at least a first mechanism phase (42). The method comprises a first step (110) in which a plurality of physical quantities (30) of at least one component (12, 14, 16, 17) of the roller bearing (10) is recorded. This is followed by a second step (120) in which at least one first and second influencing variable (52, 54) is determined on the basis of the physical variables (30). A third step (130) follows, in which a damage contribution (68) is determined based on the at least first and second influencing variables (52, 54) and the damage contribution (68) is added to a damage sum (74). In a fourth step (140), a remaining service life (77) of the components (12, 14, 16) of the rolling bearing (10) is determined by means of the damage sum (74) and a first damage accumulation model (71). According to the invention, the damage mechanism is a white etching crack mechanism. The invention also relates to a computer program product (80) for carrying out the method (100) and a detection system (85) for a roller bearing (10) on a machine (90). The invention also relates to a machine (90) which has such a detection system (85).
